When it comes to the holy grail of weekend activities here in Florida, nothing spells the perfect weekend like a day spent lazily soaking up the sunshine whilst bobbing up and down the ocean on a boat. I've even heard it being said that the only thing that beats owning a boat here in Florida, is having friends that own a boat! (A cheeky way of getting to enjoy all the perks of boating without taking any of the hassle of owning one!).Well, this weekend we were the lucky (and cheeky pair) who got treated to a lovely afternoon boat ride by our friend Gale, on his beautiful sailboat.
Being that it was my first time on a sailboat, I was slightly nervous at the beginning of our cruise, as the boat dipped to a sharp angle and the sails ballooned to navigate us through the choppy sea waters. However, within a short amount of time - and knowing that we were at the very capable hands of our experienced sailor( Gale has been at the helm of countless sea voyages to exotic destinations such as the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and Mexico)- I soon relaxed and enjoyed the ride!
After graciously offering my husband a chance at the helm ( who surprisingly demonstrated some impressive sailing skills), I thought it overly courteous of Gale when he offered me (a complete novice at anything boat-related!) the chance to steer us back home. While my navigation through the waters wasn't nearly as disastrous as I had feared, I soon realised that sailing a boat reminded me too much of doing an intense arm workout, so I soon resigned as boat captain!
Complete with breathtaking views (including sighting a dolphin couple that appeared to be in the middle of a mating call!) the day was filled with great company and good conversation. In true Florida style we ended our lovely boating afternoon off with a visit to our nearest tiki bar where we took in the gorgeous sunset ! Thanks Gale for a lovely afternoon and for graciously hosting us on your sailboat!
