Falling for Charleston
Following a fabulous Christmas with family in Raleigh , North Carolina , we decided, on our way home to Florida, to make an overnight stop at another charming Southern city along the way. This time our stop was in Charleston , South Carolina , and by the end of our night there, I had decided that it was by far my favourite Southern city in the U.S. so far!
Arriving in Charleston just before the peak of sunset we were treated to a lovely display as the sun gradually cast a warm glow on the city harbour, where numerous people had gathered to enjoy the sunset and fresh sea breeze.
After putting our bags down at the hotel, set in a lovely old building overlooking the Charleston harbour, we rushed to join the sunset crowds at a pier nearby.
After Sunset we decided to take a walk into the historic and bustling downtown district, a short stroll from the harbour. Brimming with old houses (with pretty doorways), timeworn buildings and colourful architecture, this city was certainly not lacking in charm and elegance! As we strolled further into the heart of Charleston, the oldest city in South Carolina and named after King Charles II of England, it was easy to see why this city remains top of the list in the country's most loved travel destinations .
With its polished high-street shops and glossy boutiques, Charleston is very much reminiscent of an old European city and the only clues alluding to its Southern heritage are the many colourful Antebellum-style buildings scattered throughout the city. As we continued to make our way around the bustling historic district I could tell that I was falling for this beautiful city because I just didn't want to leave!
Unfortunately for me, after having our dinner at a good ol' smokehouse in the city centre, we had to make our way back to the hotel in order to prepare for our journey home early the next morning. However as we left the chatter and noise of the night behind, I knew that one day we would have to come back to Charleston for a proper visit to this elegant city which oddly enough still manages to exude a very young vibe! A rare gem!
